Sherwood Dungeon

Sherwood Dungeon, by the same makers of Tank Ball (which I mentioned in another posting) is a real-time, 3D MMORPG played in your web browser. The graphics, like Tank Ball are fantastic, especially considering it is played in your web browser. The game is quick to load and generally lag free. The game has no storyline whatsoever, and is pretty much entirely focused on you killing monsters, doing repetitive quests and then selling and upgrading your equipment. Does this mean it's bad? Of course not. However, some people may find the idea of the game wears thin after a while. The sound is nothing particularly special and character animations look a little awkward. You can choose to play as a guest and save your stats locally on your computer, or you can register online. I highly recommend the latter, especially if you want to play on other computers. The game also has a team-based PvP arena, which I haven't tried but from what I've heard, the game's main focus is on PvE. One of the best things about the game is that it's really easy to meet your friends in-game, teaming up to go and kill monsters, etc. All in all, while the game does lack depth like many browser-based games, it is something that will certainly entertain you for half an hour before you either love the game and play more or grow bored of the idea and find something else to do with your time. One last thing to note, the game generates all of its revenue through small, unobtrusive ads at the bottom of the page, meaning that the game is 100% free.

Pros:
100% free
Very large player base, lots of people to talk to
Excellent graphics

Cons:
Does lack some depth, game can be very repetitive
Sound is nothing special, character animations can look a bit strange

Tank Ball

Tank Ball is a free, 3D multiplayer action game. I must admit, it has some of the best 3D graphics for a web game I have ever seen. The name pretty much sums up the game in itself; a game where you control a tank and shoot balls at other tanks in order to destroy them. This game is not really something you can spend hours on because it lacks a little in depth. There are no accounts, meaning that your stats will not be saved. If you can get over this, then the game is a great way to kill some time during your lunch break or whenever you want to play it. The game isn't just shooting other tanks with balls as there are various powerups which you can collect (such as weapon powerups, speed boosters etc) and you also have the option to team up with other tanks or go solo. There are lots of people playing this game, around 500 online at any one time so you will have no problem finding an opponent. Overall, I would definitely suggest you take a look at this game because it looks and plays great (there is little to no latency as well).

Pros:
100% free
Excellent graphics
Fast-paced and lag-free

Cons:
Lacks depth
No saving of stats

Urban Dead

Urban Dead is a persistant browser based MMO which places you in the shoes of a survivor (or zombie) who is in the middle of a zombie outbreak. You must find safe places to hide and help out other survivors while being able to defend yourself and others from the zombie horde. There are 3 branches of class: scientist, military and civillian. Each of these branches contain various classes ranging from a simple lab assistant to a brave soldier. If you die, you join the undead in the hunt for flesh or alternatively, you can be revived by a scientist). You can also choose to spawn as a zombie from the beginning, though in my opinion being a zombie isn't exactly all that interesting. One of the main features of this game is the use of AP (Action Points). Each day you receive a certain amount of AP which are required for carrying at certain activities (moving around, attacking). The use of AP means that people who do not have much time on their hands will not be at a disadvantage to those who are hardcore players of the game and have lots of time to spend. This is why the game has become very popular with casual gamers (those without much time on their hands). It is important to note that the game is not very newbie friendly and new players are advised to use the Urban Dead wiki for information such as maps or character creation guides (http://wiki.urbandead.com/). There is also little to no graphical content in this game.

Pros:
100% free
Very intersting concept; not many zombie games out there
Large player base with lots of teamwork and player interaction (almost 1,000,000 registered players)
The game is not very time-consuming

Cons:
Once you use up your AP there is not much to do
Not very newbie friendly, you will probably need to read guides (use the wiki)
Not very graphical, almost entirely text-based

Fallensword

Fallensword is perhaps the best free browser-based mmorpg I have ever come across. It is quite popular, with a player base of nearly 2 million players and is based in a fantasy world with dragons, goblins, etc. The pictures for various monsters and equipment are drawn superbly and look as though they are the work of professional artists. The game is very simple to learn with a large focus on PvP, but it should be noted that you will have to plan your skill allocation carefully (I suggest using the Fallen Sword Guide http://www.fallenswordguide.com/). You have a limited amount of stamina which recharges every hour (you can increase this by using "points" which can be either bought with standard in-game currency or using real money). Actions such as attacking or moving around in the in-game world use up stamina. Because of this stamina-based system, this game is great for casual gamers who do not have much time on their hands. However, this does not mean that gamers with a lot of time on their hands will not enjoy this game. While the game is free to play, points are required for many actions (such as crafting or forging items) and are used more frequently as in-game currency at higher levels than gold is. Points are usually purchased with real money, but you can also buy points with gold or by completing offers provided by the site (however, many of these require a credit card and are US only).

Pros:
Very competitive, large focus on PvP
Large playerbase with a friendly community
Artwork is fantastic

Cons:
Players who buy in-game currency with real money have a large advantage over those who don't
Very easy to "ruin" your character if you take points in the wrong skills (guides are recommended)

Ultrakillz

Ultrakillz has to be one of the worst names for a game, but regardless, this game is actually pretty cool. FPS (first-person shooter) games are generally more system intensive than most games which makes it impressive that the developers of this game managed to fit a multiplayer FPS game into a web browser. Basically, you log on to the game (alternatively you can play as a guest) and then you create a game in the lobby. There are not many players, but generally you should always be able to find a match as you log on after a few minutes. The game is also ranked and as you play more, you can achieve the higher ranks. Unfortunately the game lacks some polish to a degree, but if you can get over that then this game is a great way to kill some time. The game also significantly lacks depth and may get repetitive, so Ultrakillz is best if you are looking for a quick burst of fun. Higher latency can be a problem, but I live in a country quite far from the US and I did not experience any problems with lag.

Pros:
FPS games are rarely found in browser, let-alone multiplayer fps games
100% free
Game is competitive and ranked

Cons:
Not many players
Game lacks some polish
Lag may pose to be a problem
